Types of Pianos We Move

Upright Pianos

Also known as vertical pianos, these have the strings and soundboard running vertically, which allows for a more compact design. The sound quality and volume are generally less than a grand piano due to the shorter strings and smaller soundboard, but they are popular for home use due to their smaller size and more affordable price. They come in various sizes, including spinet, console, and studio.

Studio Pianos

A type of upright piano, taller and larger than a typical upright. Studio pianos are often found in music schools and recording studios. They usually have a better sound quality compared to smaller uprights.

Console Pianos

Slightly larger than spinet pianos, with a more direct action and thus better touch and sound. They are very popular for home use.

Spinet Pianos

The smallest of the upright pianos. They are compact and fit well into small spaces, but the sound quality and touch may not be as good as larger pianos due to the size and construction of their parts.

Grand Pianos

These are the largest and generally the highest-quality type of piano. The strings and soundboard are horizontal, and the top can be lifted open for increased volume. Grand pianos have a more responsive action and richer sound compared to upright pianos. They come in various sizes, including baby grand, parlor grand, and concert grand. Grand pianos are often used for concerts, professional recordings, and larger venues, but they can also be found in private homes.

Concert Grand Pianos

The largest type of piano, usually about 7 to 9 feet in length. They are used for concerts due to their powerful, resonant sound and wide dynamic range.

Parlor Grand or Boudoir Grand Pianos

These are medium-sized grand pianos, typically ranging from 5.5 to 6.5 feet long. They are smaller than concert grands but larger than baby grands.

Baby Grand Pianos

A smaller version of a grand piano, usually about 5 feet in length. They produce a rich sound, and are often used in smaller venues and private homes due to their compact size.

Other Piano Types

Electric Pianos

These are different from digital pianos in that they use analog technology to produce sound. Famous models include the Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos.

Hybrid Pianos

These pianos combine elements of acoustic and digital pianos. They typically have an actual acoustic piano action and sometimes a real piano soundboard, but use digital sound generation, and thus don't require tuning.

Player Pianos

These are acoustic pianos that have been fitted with a mechanism that operates the action. Historically, they used rolls of perforated paper to encode songs, but modern versions usually use digital technology.

Silent Pianos

These are usually acoustic pianos with an option to silence the strings and listen to digital sound through headphones. This can be useful for practicing without disturbing others.

Toy Pianos

Also known as Kinderklavier, these are small pianos for children. They usually have fewer keys and a simpler action, and are more of a toy than a true instrument, but there are high-quality models that can be used for performance.
