Movers USA to Participate in Composing New Law to Protect Intrastate Consumers’ Rights

At the recent close of the Maryland General Assembly, a new revised Maryland Household Goods Movers Act was passed into law. As one of the companies that already practices what this law said, Movers USA was proud to take active part in passing the new law to protect the rights of intrastate consumers.

On October 1, 2011 a new Maryland Household Goods Movers Act will go into effect, playing a role in intrastate moves only, meaning moving inside the state of Maryland, this act requires moving companies to give their customers a written estimate for the price of their move. An intrastate customer, according to the act, will only pay for the actual transported goods and service required to complete the move.

The estimate the moving company provides must separately identify each household goods (HHG) moving service that the mover will provide, and the price of each service. It must separately identify each fee that the customer will/may be required to pay. It must state an estimated total price, time, and method of payment for the HHG moving service. And it must indicate if the estimate is binding or not.

However, before this law was passed through the Maryland General Assembly, Movers USA was already practicing what this law now required companies to do. Every customer Movers USA moves, whether intrastate or not, is given a written estimate for their move. The actual price of the move will only change in case of situations that are out of the customers control that what they wouldn’t have anticipated.

Movers USA values its company on its integrity to their customers. They are trying to save customers from being burned by rogue moving companies. In the past these companies have been known to increase their prices up to four times the original estimate they were given. With this new act these companies will not be able to use such “bait-and-switch” tactics.

“There are many movers in Maryland who already observe the practices spelled out in this new act, including Movers USA. The law main purpose is to protect customers in the state of Maryland. We know how stressful moving can be for people, we only hope to make this process as easy and pain-free as possible.” said Movers USA founder and President Gil Ben Shoushan, who is also the chairman of the Maryland Movers Conference at the MMTA (MD Motor Truck Association).

Mr. Gil Ben Shoushan, Mr. Glenn Duvall, Maryland Movers Conference former chairman and Mr. Louis Campion, President of Maryland Motor Truck Association, worked carefully with Delegate Tom Hucker (D) Montgomery County, to amend the original version of the act. Legitimate movers can charge for modest differences between an estimate and unanticipated actual cost increases, as well as bill for additional services. However the new law will prevent rogue operators to legally increase prices to more than double or triple the cost of a move.
