A Brief History of Statesboro, Georgia

In 1803, the Georgia legislature passed an act that created the Bulloch County seat of "Statesborough," to be built on a 200-acre gift of land from George Sibbald of Augusta. But it wasn't until 1810 that folks began to move into the area of Statesborough.

One traveler told of visiting Statesborough in the 1840's and recalling that the people were hard working but also hard drinking, which accounts for the fact that alongside the first log courthouse stood a log whiskey shop. The only other public building was a boarding house owned by my ancestor, Uncle Charnick Fletcher.

That's about all there was to our town for the next 80 years, except for a small seedling that would grow into a legendary walnut tree — and be removed in the cover of night over a hundred years later to avoid protest from concerned citizens and allow our downtown streets to be paved. (Some citizens threatened to make a human chain around the tree to save it.)

We were not a planter society like some of our neighboring counties. Some have called our ancestors yeoman farmers, although it would be more accurate to say our folks were subsistence farmers. In the early to mid-1800's, the counryside was thickly wooded and dotted with swampland. Trade was limited since good roads were nearly non-existent and traveling to Savannah required significant effort to get across the Ogeechee River and through the swamps.
